It is not true that all of the good domain names are taken. You may still be able to register your name, your business name, or another catchy URL.

Here are some tips for choosing a domain name:

Keep it short and simple. Long URLs are hard to remember, and people are more likely to make errors when keying them in.

Include keywords in your domain name. Search engines may reward you with better placement in search results when the keywords are in your URL.

Whenever possible, go for the .com. Many people automatically assume that Web site URLs end in .com, and they do not correctly remember other extensions, such as .net or .info.

Try to avoid abbreviations and special characters in your domain name. gdbizcents.com would be very hard to give out without spelling it, and people won’t intuitively remember or guess it.

Don’t choose a name that will be easily confused with other domains. For example, if you want to register domainname.com and find it’s taken, domain-name.com is probably not a good choice. People will confuse the two sites.

Your own name could be a good domain name, if it doesn’t lend itself to lots of odd spellings. Between Cathy and Kathy, and all the ways people find to misspell Stucker, I figured no one would ever find me. That’s why I came up with IdeaLady.com.

And when putting your domain name in writing: If it is multiple words, especially if it’s long, consider capitalizing, such as I did here with IdeaLady.com. Make it easy to read and understand.

The allure of acquiring 2 and 3 letter.com and.net domains is not unfounded -- these are capable of giving your website strong recall, and an overall powerful brand. However, the likelihood of getting an unused and available 2 letter domain or 3 letter domain is slim.

To date, around fifty million domains are registered as dot coms. With this number in mind, the likelihood of getting an unused and available 2 letter or 3 letter domain is slim to none. Haggling over prices with domain speculators is a tedious and oftentimes futile process, and can be very expensive.

The allure of acquiring 2 and 3 letter.com and .net domains is not unfounded — these are capable of giving your website strong recall, and an overall powerful brand. Statistics say that, of the thousands of possible 2 and 3 letter combinations and sequences, virtually none are available to the web developer.

If you wish to acquire a great domain comprised of two or three letters, you will have to contend with swarms of speculators who will give you a hard time if you want to register one.

To give your website a name with two or three characters, you can use a domain expiry tracker and domain name scanner. These tools will inform you when a high-demand domain name is available, so you can act fast and register it for your website. The scanner will identify all the possible two to three letter and number combinations, and highlight the ones that are available. If the one you want is not available, the domain expiry tracker script can help by giving domain expire notification. Many businesses can benefit from using domain scanning or domain tracking scripts for themselves or their clients, helping to land that much-desired name soon as soon as possible.

A domain scanner or domain expiry tracker script can also aid the speculator who owns a number of domains, especially if one has purchased various names from different providers or needs to automatically renew registration. If you’re in the business of buying popular domain names for resale, domain scanner and expiry tracker scripts can be a big help. These applications can even analyze where domains are hosted, and registration information.

Domain scanners and domain expiry tracker scripts are invaluable tools for any online business. Considering that almost all short names possible are already taken, these scripts can give you an edge in taking that two or three letter domain for yourself, without all the hard work. These tools will help you significantly improve your chance of getting that domain name, and give you the potential to create a powerful online brand and presence.

What steps can you take to ensure your domains are safe?

We all know that hackers and eCriminals attack websites directly, skillfully and frequently. Now, as site administrators have grown more skilled at protecting themselves, hackers have turned to a new attack vector: hijacking site addresses. Attacks against domain name registration accounts and the hijacking of domain name system records are profoundly disruptive and dangerous to business.

Such security breaches can not only have a real impact on corporate reputation and customer trust, but can also hurt an organization’s bottom line quickly and painfully. Your company’s domain names enable customers to interact and transact with you online and, as a result, are a valuable corporate asset that needs round-the-clock protection.

If you are interested to know how you can protect yourself from such eCriminals, this six step guide will get you started right away.

A domain name is a part of a website address, usually the middle section. The website address will tend to start with www. then your domain name will follow straight after and without any gaps.

This is finished with various confusing strange letters like “.com” or “.co.uk” or even “.org” and many others, but not to confuse you, we will just use one of them for explaining purposes.

We shall use “.com” and if our domain name was “domain name buying” for example, we would end up with www. followed by “domain name buying” and ending in “.com”

Please do not get your domain name confused with your website address.

2. Things to bear in mind when deciding a domain name.

Some people get really stressed out, when deciding upon which domain name to choose.âEUR¨âEUR¨As long as you follow a couple of basic guide lines, this task should be enjoyable and exciting.âEUR¨âEUR¨Pick a name that is easy to remember.

Firstly, if we refer back to our imaginary domain name from the previous chapter above, we will be able to remember “domain name buying” a lot easier, than say “your web domain name registration created for you”

Now that was a bit of a mouthful wasn’t it? You might find that an easier way to remember it, is by going over it again and again and again and for yourself, that might work ok.

But when you verbally pass this on to someone, what are the chances of them finding your website… very slim. Have you ever played Chinese whispers and that’s without the www. to start with and the “.com” to finish with.

So keep it simple, don’t try and make things difficult. Remember you want your internet business experience to be an enjoyable one!

Secondly, If possible, try and have the domain name related to the product that you are advertising. If we still use our good old friend “domain name buying” then it needs to revolve around that subject matter.

It’s no good using this domain name for house buying, as misleading your customers is a sure way of never seeing them again. Remember, trust is so hard to gain yet… so easy to lose.

3. Where do I purchase a domain name from?

These are purchased from A registrar. Start by going to Google and typing in the search bar… “start a domain name search.” You will now be spoiled for choice and faced with countless registrars.

Click on one of them and once it opens up follow the instructions. They are free to join, but they will try to raid your pockets in other ways, as you will find out in the next chapter.

Enter your preferred domain name to see if it is available. You will possibly need to adjust it slightly until you find one that you are happy with. Make double sure you always check domain names for spelling errors, as there is no going back once you have paid for it.

So finding a cheap web domain is pointless if unrelated to your product. These website domains that you are going to pick, are going to play a major part in your business, so take your time and enjoy the journey.

4. Are there any hidden expenses?

Whilst you are making your way through the buying process within the registrar site, you will be faced with many, what we call up-sales.

These are tempting offers that they dangle in front of your eyes, so that they can put loads of add on features to your bill, (I did mention raiding your pockets, remember).

Now these do stand out like a sore thumb and trust me, you won’t miss them. But it is up to you to resist the temptation, of leaving their site with many times the value, of that what you intended to buy when entering.

Once again, trust me when I say, they are really good at persuading you. If you can picture being on a ghost train with all the crawlies hanging before you, then you’ve a pretty good idea of what I am trying to convey to you.

Now before you can use your domain name, you will need hosting and I will cover this in another topic, but just so you know, FREE domain name hosting is available if you search around, but an up-sale will be thrown at you when on the ghost train.

Now like I say, you will need it, but as free domain name hosting can be found, why pay for something if you can get it for nothing.

5. How much will a domain name cost?

The good news, is that signing up for a domain name is FREE. The bad news is that your domain name itself will cost you about $10 a year. Also if you end up paying for a domain web host, this will cost you about $10 a month.

Although you will be sent a reminder to re-new your yearly fee, what I suggest you do, is pay for 2 years when signing up. A payment is usually required via PayPal or credit card, so make sure you have either available.

There are literally hundreds of companies offering domain name registration services, but how do you know how reliable they are? How long have they been in business? Do they offer all the extra services?

Will they hold your domain to ransom when you come to transfer away? Can you be in full control of your domain at all times? Is the company just another reseller of a reseller of a reseller?!

With so many domain name registration businesses out there how can you ensure you choose one of the more reputable ones? Here are a few pointers that should help steer you in the right direction:

1. Check to see how long the company has been operating
The World Wide Web has been around for about 14 years or so now and so web hosting and domain registration businesses only began life about 11 years ago. Nominet, the registry responsible for .uk domains was 12 years old in May 2008, so most Nominet members have only been members for 12 years or less. However, there are only a few of the bigger players who have been around for all that time. So check to see how long the domain name registration business you are considering has been around for.

2. Make sure you can control every aspect of your domain name
Many domain name registration companies don’t let you make changes to your domains yourself. You have to enter a request via their support systems and then wait days for assistance. Simple things like changing IPS Tags and changing Name Servers should be possible via your control panel. Make sure you get a control panel and check out what the control panel lets you do.

3. If you want to transfer your domain away will you be charged a fee?
Many domain name registration and hosting companies charge a release fee. This charge is completely unnecessary. You should never be held to ransom over your domain name. Also, every time you change hosts and transfer your domains, on gTLDs you will have to pay a transfer in fee. This can be avoided if you make sure you use a good domain name registration company in the first place. You’ll never need to transfer a domain again!

4. Check to see if you get any email accounts
Most domain name registration services do not include email. If you want email services with your domain name, most companies charge you for email. In most cases you only get email forwarding. Even for straight forward POP3 email accounts some companies only offer 1 or 2 email accounts. You should make sure you get at least 15-20 POP3 email accounts included free of charge with your domain name registration. Most web hosting companies do not offer free POP3 email accounts. The reason for this is they offer domain name registration as an extra service. It’s not the main stay of their business.

5. Are they an ICANN accredited domain name registrar?
You should choose a domain name registration company that is ICANN accredited. Firstly, they have had to go through all the ICANN accreditation checks which is quite an in depth process. Secondly, it’s not cheap! So you know the company is committed to Domain Name Registration as ICANN accreditation is a big investment and this should give you complete reassurance.

6. Can you use their SMTP servers for out going email?
Many hosting and domain name registration providers will not let you use their SMTP servers for sending emails. They assume you can send email via your ISP’s SMTP servers. However, a great many ISP’s and broadband providers will only let you use their SMTP servers on their branded email accounts. But if you use your own email address such as dave.smith@davesmith.net you won’t be able to send email via their SMTP servers. There are workarounds but you shouldn’t have to go to the trouble. Choose the right Domain Name Registration provider who does allow sending mail via their SMTP servers. Also watch out, there are a number of the top hosting companies that will only let you use their SMTP servers on premium email accounts which incur an extra charge.

7. Are they a reseller of a reseller of a hosting company?
It makes no sense registering your domains through a reseller of a reseller! This simply adds extra layers in the ordering process that could go wrong. It is always better to register your domains with a Nominet member for .uk domains and an ICANN accredited domain name registrar for gTLDs. One way of finding out more about your domain name registration or web hosting provider is via Netcraft *See below.

By simply entering the URL into Netcraft you can then see lots of useful information such as the Nameserver Organisation, the Netblock owner(the company that is actually hosting your website) and lots of other information.

This will tell you whether your hosting provider is the actual hosting company or a reseller.

8. Make sure you always retain control of your domain name
There are literally hundreds of businesses hosting their websites with a web host they’re not happy with. Poor service, surprise invoices, unreliable uptime and email issues are just some of the common issues customers are facing today. What most of them want to do is vote with their feet and walk out the door and find another web hosting provider. However moving all their domains to another host is perceived to be a complete admin headache, so disgruntled customers continue to put up with second rate services for fear of the hassle involved in moving to a new web hosting provider.

Is there another way? Yes, there is. Businesses should be making use of a domain name registration company to centrally administer all their domains. There are lots of very professional domain name registration companies that have been in business for years and that provide fully functional control panels that give their customers full control over their domain names. Then, all they have to do is change the name server details from their old host to their new host for each domain.

So go through this 8 point checklist and make sure you choose the right home for your domain name registrations and renewals. There are plenty of companies who rely on hosting and domain name registration providers to look after the very life blood of their online businesses. More and more companies are going online and a great many of them rely on their websites for more than 60% of their revenue. So it makes sense to ensure that your domain name is in the hands of a reliable, reputable and professional company. Check to see how long they’ve been in business, make sure you can control every aspect of your domain, check to see if there are any hidden charges if you want to transfer a domain, check to see if you get any free email accounts and how many, check to see if the company is an ICANN accredited domain name registrar and a member of Nominet, check to make sure you can use their SMTP servers for sending email, check via Netcraft to see if they are a reseller or the actual hosting company and always, always make sure you retain control of your domain names.

Registering domain names are an important part of creating a website. Here David explains what you need to know about domain names.

The internet is huge pool of resources where people do most of their transactions. If you are a business or a company, the internet is a perfect and cost effective venue where you can do your selling, marketing, advertising, survey, research and other important business functions. For this reason, it is important for your company to have your own website where people can get all the information they need regarding your company, products, and services.

Why register for a new domain name

Creating a website is not enough. If you want to build your credibility and position your company alongside the legitimate and respectable businesses, you should consider registering a new domain name.

One of the biggest advantages of having your own domain name is when you change your web host you no longer have to change your URL. The domain name stays the same so people who already know your website will have no problems pulling up your website and will not be receiving any notifications about it being changed. As long as they remember the website, they will be routed directly to your site regardless your web host.

People tend to be wary of companies that do not register for their new domain name. If your company has its own domain name, it establishes your credibility not only with your existing customers but especially to your upcoming and prospective clients. Generic and dubious URLs such as those provided by free web hosting services usually give out a negative impression on people who are looking for credible and trust worthy companies.

Registering for a new domain name that describes your company or your products and services or your company’s business name will help your customers find your website without the need to consult other documents such as business cards. Not only that, it will also help customers who are trying to look for your kind of company or products and services by typing a keyword in their browser.

Advertisers often go for websites with established credibility and respectability. Registering your new domain name will help you achieve this, regardless of the type of website you have, the type of business and the type of products and services you offer.

Online Registrar

The first thing you need to do in registering for a new domain name is to register in an online registrar. Doing so will give you the right to your chosen name for a period of time, usually a year, and you will have to pay it annually to retain your rights. The registration fee ranges from $10 to $35. Registering through a web host registrar will ensure your ownership of the domain name and ensure that you are the administrative and technical contact.

Registering a new domain name may be tricky as most of the good domain names or those that are descriptive of products and services are already taken. When choosing a domain name, make a list of possible names that are not very common but is still related or descriptive of the nature of your business.
